Arthroscopic decompression for shoulder pain

Introduction

We asked people to comment on the proposed criteria that patients with subacromial (shoulder) pain will need to meet for arthroscopic subacromial (shoulder) decompression surgery.

They were able to click here to review the proposed commissioning statement that will be considered when the Greater Manchester Procedures of Limited Clinical Value (PLCV) Steering Group meets to review this intervention. Please note that this is not a decision-making group and any recommendation it makes will need to go through NHS Greater Manchester governance process for approval to implement.

What is subacromial (shoulder) pain?

It is a general term used to describe pain which originates from the shoulder and can spread towards the neck or down the arm.

Subacromial pain can develop due to:

• age related changes
• repetitive strain
• injury or trauma

However, this condition can sometimes appear without any apparent reason.

Why was NHS GM reviewing it's commissioning statement?

The current GM Shoulder Impingement Commissioning Statement was last fully reviewed in May 2020 and has therefore been scheduled for review by the GM PLCV Steering Group.
